i graduated from college and im going to grad school...so i definitely think education is important...

however, almost everyone i know who i graduated with has gotten a job that has nothing to do with their major when we were in school. example: my english major friend works for a catering business.

basically, college is important, but are majors important??? is it all about the college experience but not what you actually study???

Hey Lola, I know you majored or are going to major in art history or something like that. I just want to say: don't give up! Many people will tell you a degree in fine arts is a piece of crap that won't help you get a job. Yes, it's probably less marketable than other degrees, but you still have many opportunities in front of you: you can work in a museum, or an art gallery, or you can teach and if you are also good at drawing, painting or sculpting, you can make your own art on the side and sell it.
I think majors are important. I'm good at taking photographs on a 35mm camera, and at designing stuff, retouching pictures, and so on. But I have a language degree from Italy, and nobody would take me to work in a design or a photography studio here in the US. So, at 28, I went to college again to get an associates in Graphic/Interactive Design and, if I still have $$$, Photography as well.
According to one of my Photo teachers, a major isn't important to get a job but having a college degree is - she allegedly got a BA in History and worked as a photo editor for a magazine. However, she also has a master from the Rhode Island School of Design. I'm pretty sure without it she wouldn't be teaching Photography now...

Some people say that after you go to college, it's easier to major in something else later on because you've experienced what it's like to be in a work situation, and besides, if you're good in English, you can always be helpful when it comes to writing business letters or talking to people in a catering business. =D

Unless your major leads directly to a career (engineering, business, pre-med, etc.) its unusual to find a career in your major field.

Often times a degree in Liberal Arts is just viewed as an entrance ticket top polite society, along the lines of "well, he could stick with sociology for 4 years and get the degree he'll likely show up on time and be able to read - let's hire him."

My pal that now works for Halliburton says that geologists are one of the crucial so much particularly paid staff. Business is not one of these dangerous measure both. There's nonetheless a position for the liberal arts. They're simply known as activities.

Majors are important if you make them important. If you are passionate about something then you go for it. And no offense to you and your friend, not much can be done by English majors 'cept becoming editors/writers/teachers.
