My dog recently ran under a car and ended up with her two right legs being torn off. She was pretty quiet for a few days but seems OK now, except that she can't walk. do you think I should take her to a vet or can dogs recover from these injuries without help? Also, my smaller dog keeps biting at the wounds. Is this normal? She is an Irish water spaniel - i've heard that they are very resilient.

I've reported the first answer as abuse. I care a lot about my dog and feel bad enough alresdy without people making distasteful jokes at my bitche's expense.

Any suggestions that involve euthinasia will also be reported as abuse due to my religious beliefs. You have been warned. Since I asked the question, I have given her a bath in TCP. She didn't like it at first, but started purring after a while. She seems much happier now.

Oh dear, poor you.
Now you have some work to do. You will need some wood, some large cable ties and a wheel from a baby carriage if you are american or a pram if you are British.
Right, attach the pram/baby carriage wheel to the end of the piece of wood, make sure it is at right angles to the wood and it spins freely. Now strap the wood to the dog using the cable ties, get them nice and tight and have the wood projecting out to the right side of the dog with the wheel set so that the dog`s body is parrallel to the ground.
With a bit of training the dog will learn to sort of hop on his/her left legs and the wheel will keep it upright.
Do you have any knowledge of motor racing ? Gran Turismo is a perfect place to start. You can experiment with camber and toe-in/out. Just send the dog around the block as fast as it can go and time it with a reliable stopwatch, the setting that gets you the quickest time is the one to keep.
I hope this helps.
As for the other dog biting at the wounds, a good kick in the teeth will provide a reasonable detterent, especially after a few have been broken free from it`s jaw. (Be sure to wear a stout boot wheen doing this, we don`t want you injured as well do we ?)
Oh, did you keep the two legs that were ripped off ? I have a lovely Korean recipe book with some great ideas for Irish Water Spaniel legs. Do you prefer spicy or a nice soup with noodles ?
Anyway good luck and have fun setting some quick times around the block.
Gosh, you are going to have so much fun together eh ?
A man and his dog..how lovely.

Gee for someone who says they care about their animals you sure show ignorance. Having read your question, I am amazed that you stopped the bleeding so fast, and that the dog was able to get over the shock of the injuries so well. What did you use for stitches, and why didn't you report the driver of the car.
Still on the lighter side you could always take the animal to the vet and have her put out of her misery, because that is what you are causing her.
If you truly loved animals you would have gone to a vet as soon as possible.. so do the right thing this time.

Sorry I didnt read your whole question but I have an answer.
TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET!!
Your dog has had two legs ripped off by a car and you havent take it to the vet?? Did you stich up the wounds yourself? Did you disinfect the wounds?? Take it to the vet... please
All i can think is that you are scared the vet will put the dog down. You have to try, as hard as it may be, to do what is best for the dog. Your vet is the best person to help you and will not force you to do anything, asking people on the internet is a bit silly

I simply cannot believe that your dog has not seen a vet after this accident ..... either you are very stupid or this is a complete wind up. In any event, you shouldn't be in charge of any animals. And if the problem is lack of money to pay the vet, that is simply no excuse for the complete lack of attention. If my dog was hurt like yours, I would beg, steal or borrow to secure instant vetinerary attention. I am sorry but I cannot believe you are asking this question ...... I tell you, if you had an arm and a leg torn off .... you would not be quiet for two days and you would not recover. You have had an animal in an emergency situation and you have done nothing! This is madness !!

Why have you not already taken your dog to the vet. Do you think a human could recover from the same without help. This is cruel take her to the vet and put her out of her misery and suffering!
How can you talk about caring when you have done nothing to help the dog you are her owner and she fully relies on you. The courts would she this as cruel causing unnecessary suffering. Don't talk about reporting people for abuse as that is what people should be reporting you for. fair do's the 1st comment was cruel but you are far worse

You haven't taken your dog to the vet? Are you stupid or just lazy? She might have internal injuries that need looking at, as well as the wounds where her legs were torn off. Plus she can't have much of a life with just two legs, I'd take her to the vet right now.

It is a very inhumane situation for your dog. A dog is made to run on at least three legs, with restrictions...
You honestly should consider that your dog is suffering and taking her to a vet to be humanely euthanized. I know this is a terrible thought, but it will save you and your dog a lot of unnecessary suffering on the long run.
If she would be out freely in nature, she would ultimately also die due to the injury, directly or indirectly, anyway.

I can categorically confirm that the blood supply to one leg is so vast that should a limb be torn off the dog would die from major blood loss within minutes. Halve this time for 2 severed legs!! It is unlikely that the dog could be saved even if immediate veterinary attention was sought. I therefore conclude that you are pulling our leg!
