I agree with those saying to tell her "NO" firmly (not angrily, but not smiling either) then put her on the floor and give her no attention for 1 minute. If she continues to hit you during the 1 minute, I would repeat the "NO" and tell her "that hurts mommy" then ignore her again.
Personally, I'd use a time out chair, even at this age, but for no longer than 1 minute at a time(1 minute per year of her age is the standard). The minute starts over again if she does the behavior.
I think most ppl would say that she's too young for time outs but you'd be surprised how much they understand at this age.

Stay calm, if she gets a reaction, she will keep doing it for fun.
Say "No" calmly and firmly, then put her down in a confined space like a crib or a play pen for a few minutes. Choose a specific amount of time (2-3 minutes), and be consistent with the time. Once the time is up, pick her up again, and if she doesn't smack you, play with her, or give her one of her favourite toys. If she smacks you again, repeat the "No" and put her down again.
It shouldn't take long to break the habbit.

I have six children. We never called it "smacking" first of all. Babies are very distractable. Just direct her attention to something else. Do not take it personally and don't ever hit her back. In fact, don't EVER hit a child. The less you make of it the better. All of our chldren are very loving and gentle. Good luck, Mom of 6 ages 26-7

She will understand no if you say it in a firm voice. Mine used to do the same, i think all babies do at one point. But if you tell her 'no' and follow it with "no, that gives mommy a boo boo" she will eventually understand that it. Just be patient. Good luck !

I say you encourage it. That guy Moe from the three stooges did it to Curly and Shemp all the time. Look where it got him, a big time movie star. My wife says. You could kiss her hands and tell her no sweety, don't do that. Mommy loves you.( I still say my way is better. )
