I REALLY want a dog, but I don't know which one is right for me. I've been checking out stuff on the Internet about Bermese Mountain Dogs, and they look amazing! Does anyone have one out there, and can you give me some advice about them? Thanks so much!! :)

As a groomer, I can tell you they are good dogs and generally well behaved, but with 2 drawbacks. First, they slobber a lot, just like Beethoven in the movies (yes, I KNOW Beethoven was a St. Bernard, but Berneses slobber too.) Second, Berneses are a double-coated breed, which means they have a thick second coat under the shiny topcoat. This requires them to be brushed daily with proper grooming tools to keep down the shedding and prevent mats from forming. They will also need regular trips to a professional groomer to maintain their coat. If you are okay with that, then go for it! They are sweet dogs with great personalities and a lot of energy. If you're looking for something lower maintenance, consider another breed- I always am sad when I have to shave down a dog like this because the fur was just too much for the owner to handle.

BerNese Mountain Dogs, not BerMese. They're Swiss, not South Asian.

They were bred to be draft dogs and drovers in the Swiss mountains, which means that they're hard working, intelligent, and strong. They are good sized, standing about 26" at the shoulders and anywhere from 80-115 pounds. Because of their size and their coat, they are susceptible to heatstroke in warm climates. It's my understanding that they are good family dogs.

HOWEVER. There is a lot more to getting a dog than looks - breeds are not interchangeable and it's important to get a dog that matches your lifestyle, not just one that you think "looks amazing". What do you want in a dog? Do you want a lap companion? Jogging partner? Guardian? How much grooming are you willing to do and how much shedding are you willing to put up with? Do you live in an apartment, a townhouse, a home with a fenced yard? How much exercise and play time will you be able to give to the dog?

Dogs are not fashion accessories. It's important to make sure that the dog you get is the right one for you, not just the one you think is cutest.

I don't have one, but I have had them in my classes. They have very nice personalities. Sweet and low energy.

They do require regular brushing, that is quite a bit of coat. They also tend to not live very long and do have health problems. Go to the national breed club website for more info. Make sure to get one from a good breeder who shows her dogs and does health testing. There are probably also breeder listing on the breed club website. Members of the breed club will have certain ethics to comply with and most breeders who are members will be good ones.
