first of all , you need to realise that even if the dog is supposed to be the child's, you as the adult are the one that have to take full responsibility for the dog - make sure it is fed and treated rigth and that it gets proper training and mental stimulation. A ten year old can do many of these things, but an adult must make sure that the things are done, and done correctly. Remember small bredds often live to be 15 years old - are you sure the childs interested will keep?
Anyway: I would stay away from most terrierbreeds - they are highenergy breeds! Look for dogs from the same category as malteser, toy pudel, coton de tulear - read about dogs - go to the libary with your child and find some of the books about the breeds. You also need to decide whether you can spend time every day or every other day on fur brushing. Some breeds need regular trimming by a professional - can you afford that?
Finally: after choosing the breed: go to a reputable breeder, someone willing to spend time telling about their breed and giving advice - meet two or three breeders and make sure you get to see the mother and all the pups in a litter. Find someone you feel good about and buy the dog there.
Alternatively go to a rescueservice and let them help you find a dog.
Stay away from petshops and do not, i repeat do not!, buy a pup "to save it" You might save that one pup, but you will also encourage further pups being made by the same person.

I would suggest an American cocker spaniel as they are small (not toy), but are great dogs for kids as they are member of the sporting group so like to play and can easily keep up with a 10 year old, however are small enough to be able to have indoors with walks and to cuddle. We have owned 3 separate American cocker spaniels and they all had an amazing happy temperaments, and have been loyal family pets. The only caution is to make sure that you go to a reputable breeder no matter what breed you settle on because any puppy that comes from a puppy mill can suffer severe temperament issues, which you do not want with a child in the home. Cocker spaniels shed little as their hair is more like a humans, continuing to grow longer and longer, so you will have to have them clipped every several months.

I have 2 basset hounds. One is 14 and one is a year and a half. My kids are 10 and 7 and when they were babies my kids used to sit and pull on the dog and their was never a complaint out of the dog. They are great with kids, they love to be indoors and outdoors as well. I think Basset Hounds are the forgotten breed! They are the best with kids!

I suggest a jack russel terrier. Jacks are smart dogs who are hyper and stay at a good size. You have to be careful getting dachunds, I'm not sure if that's is how you spell it. I was reading through the answer and I saw lots of recommendations at this type of dog. These dogs are cute, yet you have to be careful. If they get overweight too much, it causes lots of strain on their little legs. Plus, they can't jump from high places or run to fast. They are cute and sweet dogs though. I had once. Shih Tzus, Maltese, Poodles, etc are great dogs too yet they need lots of grooming and sometimes can be snippy. Jack Russels are great dogs. Plus, you child will look forward to running around and playing with a Jack, they have lots of energy. They are great for kids. Good Luck!

I have found that usually the dog chooses you as much as you choose the dog. I would take your child to the humane society, talk to the workers to find out which dogs there have the right temperament for your situation and then see which one the two of you connect with. There are so many different personalities within each breed that it is important to assess the dogs individually instead of by breed.

Dachshunds are really great dogs but whatever type of dog you choose don't get it from a pet store. Check out you local humane society first as there are so many animals that need good homes. Mix breed dogs are usually great dogs also. Good Luck!
I have a Sheltie (Shetland Sheep dog) and he is great with kids but more of a mid size dog - 40lbs.

Pomeranian are wonderful dogs. The males don't even shed! They are smart, energetic, patient, and playful. They are actually good little guard dogs too. I have a 9 year old and a 16 month old and our Pom is great with both children. They don't eat much and are very clean little dogs! Good luck!

is your 10 year old a boy or girl? active outdoors or couch potato? do you want a long or short haired pup? how big is too big? i think a beagle or beagle mix would be great, short hair, not too much sheding, love to play, high energy to keep up with the most active kid i'd go with the 13 inch variety not too big but big enough that it won't get steped on. i also recomend getting your pup from your local animal shelter why not save a life? and there already vet cheked and fixed!!!

I would recommend a mini dachshund...I have two and they're the sweetest girls! They love kids, have awesome personalities and are smart (although they can be a bit stubborn at times). Mine were extremely easy to house train, also by using the "kennel" method. Have fun picking out your new dog!

I have an 11 and a 9 year old and they have done really well with our minature daschaunds. We have 3 and haven't had any problems. You might want to try a local rescue for help locating one.
