Your dog has established that she can be in charge. She is wrong, but you'll need to go about correcting her carefully.

I suggest you sign her up for obedience training. Not so much to teach her to sit, but to establish the "who's in charge" attitude. This class will teach you how to take control, without hurting your dog.

Punishing her may result in destructive behavior. Dogs are social animals, they live in packs. That instinct is in your dog, and she's determined she's the alpha of the pack. It's important you begin to take control of every negative situation.

Whatever you do, do NOT hit your dog. This could make the dog worse and also fearful to people. You do need to put the dog in it's place for sure though. You should definitly take the dog to obedience/behavior classes but if you cannot do this you can still educate yourself on how to deal with this.

When the dog bites, you should grab the dog firmly (not too hard though) by the muzzle and hold the mouth closed for a couple of seconds. At the same time say NO very firmly.
It will take several times probably of doing this but hopefully this helps.

It all has to do with dominance. You have to show the dog that they do not rule the household. Do not feed it tablescrapes and let it have it's way all the time.

If you can go to an obedience class or something like that, it can make a world of difference and you can have a very happy friendly dog.

When she starts barking..... hold her muzzle shut and firmly say QUIET! Repeat as needed. Be firm and consistent.

Likewise for the biting, hold her muzzle shut and say NO! Be firm and don't give her any affection.

Barking collars can be bought if it continues to be a problem. They get a mild shock when they bark.

Give your dog plenty of toys and chew toys .....so her need for chewing is satisfied on appropriate items.

good luck ....

Ask your vet or go to the library and get a book specifically about Maltese dogs. Hopefully it will outgrow that behavior. At one year old it is really still a puppy.

Could be time for going to sleep.

I remember this big, beautiful dog that the people kept telling me would never bite me.

One day I approached the house, and the dog just growled.

The people were amazed, and said they were not going to stand for this, and apologized about it, and told me they were going to put that beautiful dog to sleep.

I begged them not to.

Never saw that dog again.
