''like'' is a word in the English language which functions as a simile. What this means is that ''like'' makes a comparison between two things. For example, ''Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get." Most likely the Valley Girls started to over use and abuse of this word. You should use a variety of words in a sentence to make it more comprehensible and it makes the individual appear more intelligent (whether they are or not). People who are have a short list of intelligent and respectable vocabulary over use the word ''like''.

Yes, there are rules for using the word like and all the other words in the English language. They are found in textbooks in schools, taught by men and women who would appreciate being able to understand others when having a conversation. Unfortunately, and sadlly, the majority of our students would rather talk on their cell phones, or send text messages consisting mostly of drivel, rather than learn to read so they could discern the rules of grammar.

"Like" should only be used to describe a feeling or to compare something. There's nothing worse than these 28-year-old LAWYERS at my firm who still say "like" every other word.

I use it for a filler when i talk. It makes me sound like an airhead which is kind of ironic considering i use "like" a lot so that i dont sound stupid (like with the dead air and all) but it became a habit. If you like "like" then i suggest using it with "kindda" and "you know..."
