God is imaginary, you can envision the concept as you see fit.

Because "modern" religion promotes the subjugation of women.
Not "all" religions consider God to be male. Just the more dominant and modern ones.
The modern religions' attempt to eradicate the Earth Mother/Goddess and beliefs with which women were held in any esteem has been fairly successful, wouldn't you say? Particularly the early Christian.... They re-wrote and revised even the basic oral history by simply killing off any who held it dear. Then introduced doctrine that implies that man was "created in God's own image" and that women were from that man, turned evil and are not worthy of being anything more than subjugate chattel.
Before modern religion, the Life Giver was GODDESS, for the most part. And women were revered for that. The only lasting testimony to that would be the saying that "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world".

They did that so christianity will be set apart from the matriarchal pagan religions. A goddess has been worshipped as a diety and creator of life long before christianity, so the early christians made theres a "he" so they can show the difference and not be considered another pagan religion. There were plenty back then. The golden calf that Moses' brother made when moses went to speak to god was a female representation of a pagan god. It was a symbol of the egyptian goddess of creation.

Well you have to remember that the culture didn't believe in female leaders as much as they believed in Male rulers. God also first created Adam in his image which gives us a hint to what God is. Then out of Adam Eve was created. The better question is Why does it matter if God is a man or a woman? God is God and that should be enough.

Because He made the first spirit in the images of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Then in Genesis 2 He made the body of Adam from the earth and placed the spirit into it. God's image is of a male spirit. He then made Eve as a help mate for Adam.
Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Genesis 2:21-22 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
If you want to fully understand the word of God, this is what God says for us to do....
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth
To rightly divide means to fully understand God's word which is the truth..

Why are a group of guys and girls referred to guys? Almost the same thing, even a lot of the things in the bible say men it means men and women. And we can't called God it, because that's not right either. Maybe also because in those days Men were the head and the ones that were respected most. Good question!

The main reason is that in English, the word "he" refers to males or to persons whose sex is not known.
Christians believe that Jesus is God -- and there is ample evidence that he is male.
There are many other religions besides Hinduisms that have or had female gods. Th Greeks even had a goddess of war.

As a female I take no offense to this anymore than the term 'mankind'. God could be neither male nor female or both, but I read the other day that his mother was female (and no, I'm not joking, I read it on a website that professes to explain where God came from)

Not all religions have god/gods as male. Christianity, Judaism and Islam have God as male because they are all derived from the same patriarchal tribal religions practiced by nomadic groups of the ancient world. Progress with these groups often hinged on military success, an area usually dominated by males. Naturally these people would worship male deities.

Because the concept of God in the Bible was manufactured in a time period where women had little to no rights or respect in society.
Isn't that proof enough to you that the Bible is false? If it was God's true word, wouldn't it represent an enlightenment and not the ignorance of the time period?

that's no longer common awareness, however the classic Hebrews initially theory Yahweh had a spouse, Asereth, a Canannite fertitly goddess. As they stepped forward strictly monothesitc ideals, it looked mroe organic to think of of Yahweh as a male deity.
