There are many factors. Hair loss is not always an indication of mange. My son's black lab, who I seem to have inherited, has a terrible skin condition that makes her itch and chew her hair out. It could be allergies, the food the dog eats, a skin condition like psoriasis, or many other factors. Yes, it COULD be the beginning of mange, but if it's been any period of time, it would have spread by now. Sulfodene is pretty good, but you might also try cortizone cream. That seems to be what helps my son's dog the most.

You need to find out what is causing this before you start treating it. Mange, diet, allergies, all will take specialized treatment to solve the problem. In the meantime, try frequent bathing with pine-sol, all over, not just on affected area, rinsing well each time. This will kill parasites and fleas. Also give over the counter human Benedryl tablet each day for the itching. It doesn't matter which brand. My dog has bad allergies in the summer, weighs 150 pounds and two pills a day gives him a lot of relief.

I'd definitly take him to a vet. If it is mange and you have other animals you can give them mange. There are two types of mange one cannot be passed the other can. Mange is treatable and if taken to a vet right away it will help alot of things. They can also diagnose it if it is not mange.

Well it could be mange, but it could also be allergies. Without seeing the dog I couldn't give you a straight answer. My best advice is... get your dog to a vet asap. He will be able to tell what it is in a matter of seconds after looking at it...

It sounds to me like your dog has a yeast infection. Does he get in stale ditches of water? Call your vet. There is a shampoo for this and it works wonderfully! It is inexpensive and well worth the try. good Luck

Take him to the Vet ASAP.
If you don't and let it continue the Vet could have you arrested for animal cruelty. Even if you did try to help him.
