No The BMW3 series wins Hands down.

If you look on power/speed performance go for a BMW. VW is a family car design by all means, including low cost maintenance, to not mention the lower gas cost, read the specifications.
The reason the people are looking for European cars lately is the ratio $/mile in the matter of gas consumption.
Speaking of gas, these are both pretty low consumption.

theyre different. The bmw is less family focused and much sportier.

i would personally go for one of the new GTis. Pretty much as much room as the passat (hatchbacks are wickedly efficient with space), and much more fun to drive.

and about 10 grand lighter on the wallet.

I wouldn't necessarily say its better but from recent BMW commercials they have a very good maintenance warranty/program.

Volkswagens suck.. At leas the new ones, I myself like the old ones 1971 and earlier.

Expensive, to buy, to maintain and to repair. This is the reason I prefer American cars.
