...should I write in French or English? My French isn't THAT good, so I guess it depends on what I write in the first letter.

I think that you should write in English,it'll give the person to practice their English and build a bewtter cultural experience. You should talk about what you would want hear. Tell them about yourself and just talk like you normally would when you're meeting a new person.

How did you meet your pen pal? If this is done through a language school program, they would likely want you to write in French and your pen pal to write in English. That way you can both practise the other language. Or you could write one page in English and one page in French.
The first letter should be about you -- talk about your family, how many brothers and sisters you have, where you go to school, what games you like to play, and things of that sort. You're just getting acquainted in your first couple of letters. Once you know each other a little better, it will be easier to find things to talk about, and common interests that you share.
Bonne chance!

Write in both French and English. People like it when you make an effort, and I have heard that the French are particular proud of their culture, country and language. you will get good practice and impress your pal!!!

Tell them about yourself, your likes and dislikes and american culture. the sports you play and about school life I would write in english and write a few words in french, but tell the penpal that you are learning french and only know a few words.

Write in English. Just tell him/her about yourself, your interests, that sort of thing. The first letter should be the easiest to write! You don't have to divulge all your personal stuff the first time.

i think language is not a barrier in your relationship w/ him at all, your situation is pretty much easy, just express yourself freely by writing in english or in your own words and try to add few french words, i think english can be learned easily than french if im not mistaken, he'll figure it out for sure.

Write it in English and let him/her decipher it. You can tell your friend that in your next letter you will attempt to write in French.

You should write your letter in English, that way you express yourself thoroughly. Then, a website (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) can translate that into French.Good luck!
