WHO told you that you couldn't join the military due to being blind in one eye? I have checked into these things. You can be in the military with a blind eye, because I have a VERY good friend who is a Military police officer in the Marines and has no eyesight in one eye. My daughter has also taken Basic Law Enforcement training and she is blind in the Right eye from an injury. I don't know what your local laws are, but Federal law does not prevent you from performing your job with a missing eye, unless you have poor eyesight that cannot be fixed with glasses in the good eye.

I seriously doubt your friend actually had a deaf man in the police academy. While there are many jobs that people with disabilities can do, being a police officer would be extremely difficult. How would a deaf police officer hear his radio? How would an officer who is blind in one eye be able to maintain situational awareness when their line of sight is limited? Your limitation could prove deadly not only to yourself, but to your partners and those you are protecting as well. While you are well intentioned, I think you might want to consider an alternative. If it is law enforcement you are interested in, there are plenty of other jobs you could be well suited for. What about a police dispatcher? Or perhaps a forensics specialist?

Police are less likely to ban someone for a minor physical disability, that can often make an officer more accessable to certain parts of a given community so their shouldn't be a problem.
I once watched a one-legged officer on the show COPS chase down and capture a man who ran from him. The suspect had been riding a bike so he wasn't in too bad of shape, but the cop ran him down and jumped a fence to capture him - all in the space of about 10 seconds.
Tell your friend to go for it!

You are only limited by what you decide limits you. Anyone can apply, all they can say is no. Before you go get certified and spend the money on the class and gear and stuff you should try talking with a department that would maybe hire you and kind of find out what their ideas on the matter are.

I'm not completely sure. I know (because of a friend I work with) that if you are legally blind in one eye you cannot even get your drivers license. Whether this is exclusive to my home state I don't know. Check with the actual police department or even your doctor. They will be more versed in regulations concerning this.

I don't know about the police officer but if you really wanted to join the army you probably still can. Just don't let them know about your condition.. I know of one guy that had the same problem in my unit, he memorized the eye test so he could pass it even when closing his good eye. There are ways to get aroung it...

Ahhh No, I knew a guy that was with the California Highway Patrol. He told me he actually got a traffic ticket while in his CHP patrol car by another CHP officer. (It was warranted) LOL He ran off the road. So much for being above the law.

You might try this. In the meanwhile, you could fairly quickly get certified as a communications officer, which is a professional term for dispatchers. Stay fit while you keep trying.

nope..sorry but if you are blind in one eye you have to be able too see fully out of both eyes with glases or contacts if you dont have 20/20. alot of this is due to shooting in situations where there may be innocent poeple around and or its dark out or there is alot of traffic, you have to take inot conisideration when you go out for shooting practice you either go somewhere in a building where the lighting and everything is perfect or you have your one spot outside where you see best.
