I have never agreed on this evolution thing because no evolutionist has convinced me yet with a solid evidence that evolution is a fact. Tell me why you are strongly convinced that evolution is really true. Dont give details about denominations forget about that.

Please make your answers very simple and dont fight!

You at least seem to share creationist confusion #1: the "theory vs. fact" thing.

The fact that you are unconvinced comes from the problem attitude that you have about evolution. If you go to alt.talk.origins (esp. the FAQ) you can find the answers to all of the creationist propaganda. I'll bet you that you either won't bother looking, or take a quick glance without taking it seriously.

Evolution is a fact because it occurred, and continues to occur, and has been observed occurring, and because the fossil records demonstrate that it has occurred, and that it is the origin of the variety of species on the Earth. In these ways it differs not at all from the "gravity" theory of why things are on the ground and not floating in mid-air, or the "water vapor" theory of rain and snow.

Evolution is in fact solid science, and the only reason there is any dispute about it is that it demonstrates the falsehood of people's religious beliefs. There is no scientific controversy about whether or not evolution is the origin of the variety of species: ALL of the controversy is the product of religious dishonesty.

Ok lets leave the religious side of it out, and just look at the human race in the last 500 years. Back in the 1500's the average human was 5'4-5'7 in height. Pretty average. Through out the centuries due to climate change, nutritional changes and economic changes the human race is now and average 5'7-5'9 in height. A person that stands at 6 fee in height today is considered normal, however I visited a historical villiage in England back in the 80's that dated to the 1200's and the archeologists had discovered a skeleton of a man that stood 6'5 in that time he would of been considered a giant. Evolution is not a quick and noticable action it is very subtle. Forget about the evolutionary chart, just look around at your own family history. Take a look at photographs of your relatives particularly those of the "great-great" type. They were probably shorter than you.

As to the evolution of animals are concerned, it is the same thing. They change due to enviromental, and nutritional changes as well. Sometimes a catastrophe is all it takes to wipe out a species. In St. Louis MO. There is a natural history museum that has a counter with a countinuing counting of species of plants and animals that become extinct per minute. Most of the extinction is caused by us, however some of it is just natural. Now if evolution and extinction are opposites on the same coin, then it stands to reason that those animals that became extinct due to natural causes did not evolve to adapt to the enviromental, or nutritional changes that took place. Evolution is a fact, otherwise your creator is playing around with the lives of every living thing and letting them die a suffering death. To me that is not what it is all about.

As to my personal twist to this...I am a witch I do believe we were created but after we were created, the goddess let us grow and adapt to our surroundings. She does watch us and cares for us but will not intervene with the natural process she set up.

Evolution is not a matter of 'belief'.

In science, a 'theory' is not just 'an idea', as the scientifically ignorant seem to think, in common parlance... it is an explanatory framework for a set of observed facts... a description, or model, of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same sort, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation. In the case of the 'Theory of Evolution', the OBSERVED FACTS are changes to the genetic makeup of populations of organisms, over time. The explanation is genetic drift (statistical variations in the genetic within a population) and mutations (random), operated on by natural selection (NOT random). In other words, "The non-random survival of randomly varying replicators (Richard Dawkins)." NONE of this is in dispute among scientists. It represents a consistent body of scientific fact extending back almost 150 years, which is well supported by genetics and by the fossil record. There has NEVER been anything found to refute it.

*************
"In science, 'fact' can only mean 'confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent.' I suppose that apples might start to rise tomorrow, but the possibility does not merit equal time in physics classrooms." ~ Stephen Jay Gould
*************

Evolution is strictly a biological science. It has nothing whatsoever to do with or to say about the origins of the universe or the world. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the origins of life. It has only to do with changes to the genetic makeup of populations of organisms, over time.

The people who vociferously dispute evolution are generally those whose livelihood depends on having large flocks of scientifically ignorant believers (sheeple) who do not question what they are told... they merely parrot it. If those sheeple were to actually begin to think for themselves, and investigate the scientific facts with an open and critical mind, they would at some point begin to realize things like "Hey... this idea that the earth and humans were created over 6 days somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago is absolute horseshit. The Universe is around 14 billion years old, and the earth is around 4.7 billion years old." Or: "Wow... look at that... there is absolutely no evidence in the geological record that there was ever a world-wide flood... and there is plenty of evidence that there was not."

Within the past few decades, astronomers have discovered unimaginally huge clouds of organic chemicals (the 'building blocks of life') in space, in the vicinity of 'stellar nurseries'. This reinforces the idea that life is ubiquitous... not a unique condition associated exclusively with our little planet. In fact, it may be that "when and how did life arise on earth?" may not even be the right question. There is a very real possibility that primitive 'life' was raining down upon the earth over the entire time that it was forming, and for hundreds of millions of years afterward. The REAL question might be "When did conditions on earth settle down enough that life was able to take hold?" Google for 'panspermia'.

Evolution is NOT a fact, it is a theory, and the theory was developed by observation of facts. One does not need to look very far to see the "facts" that were observed to form the theories, theories which continue to evolve as new data are added to the mix. It would seem that it would take a very closed mind to ignore what we see. We need look no further than our own known history to see "evolution" in play. Although the average intelligence of a homo sapiens has not increased dramatically in many thousands of years, his appearance, stature, dexterity, etc. has certainly changed to suit his surroundings. I make no case as to evolution, to me it is a given. I can make NO sense of creationism or "intelligent design." That line of thought (I did not say reasoning) can only be attributed to bull dung.

Besides carbon dating and the many fossil records we have, there is the constant evolution of viruses and bacteria in response to the cures we manufacture.

The humurous question asked of fundamentalists at the doctor's office is, "Would you like a vaccination against the current form of the flu or the one from the 1800s?"

Until there is proveable scientific evidence to the contrary I will continue to look at Evolution as plausible. Genetics has proved that certain percentages of the same DNA exist in all life, which suggests a single source. Why do you care? Believe what you will.

Unfortunately it's impossible anymore to make a simple statement to convince you, the debate has risen to such a level that you can refute any statement like it was observed in X. You will say , "no it wasn't". Then we have to cite sources and go on and on. Until eventually we are talking about allele mutation or replacement.

Here you go anyway:

Another impressive example of incontrovertible transitional forms predicted to exist by evolutionary biologists is the collection of land mammal-to-whale fossil intermediates. Whales, of course, are sea animals with flippers, lacking external hindlimbs. Since they are also mammals, the consensus phylogeny indicates that whales and dolphins evolved from land mammals with legs. In recent years, we have found several transitional forms of whales with legs, both capable and incapable of terrestrial locomotion.
