The type excercised in Fight Club for instance. Can two men, who are friendly, beat the tar out of each other and learn something about themselves in the process? Just wondering what people think about this.

Sure they can. I suppose it has something to do with tolerance for pain, strength, endurance, and stupidity.

When it hurts, its not "fun" anymore.
There are specific diagnoses for people who like to be hurt, or get a kick out of hurting others.
And yeah, every experience in life has a some self-examination/revelation opportunity. So I guess there is something to be learned.
The real question would be "Is the lesson worthwhile"?

possibly..Lots of cultures utilize pain and the limits of the human body in order to ascend to a higher plane spiritually..though its usually self inflicted...there are some people who get help inflicting pain onto themselves from a friend or a social group member.
