Unfortunately it is not a con and can therefore not be shut down. They are very clever in that they play psychological tricks (having the counter run down to nearly zero before answering the call, etc.) but that is not against the law. They are careful to show all disclaimers on the screen (such as just because you rang doesn't mean that you get to have a guess). It's quite interesting to watch from a psychology point of view - and to hear people giving the same wrong answer again and again. :)

these and other tv quizzes are not really quizzes in the proper sense of the word - they are lotteries. The whole point is that they ask questions that 99% of the population will know the answer to, and in doing so will rack up thousands of callers and the fee from the phone companies. Only one caller is chosen and randomly. It is therefore a lottery.
In other words, dont "play" it as the odds are worse than the national lottery.

Bottom line. Theres a question you know the answer to. Its late at night and the presenter is saying who will phone me? Its all designed to make you think" i`ll phone em" when in fact loads of people are doing just that!
