My dog was bitten by something yesterday- a small pin prick but it caused bleeding and serious swelling around her eye and down to her throat. The vet ran some tests and didn't find any venom. Could a non-poisonous snake cause that much swelling? Or maybe it was a poisonous snake that didn't inject its venom? Any other animals that could've caused it? (We were down by a river).

Your vet couldn't come up with any ideas? Maybe it was a sting rather than a bite.

A non-poisonous snake has no venom and no fangs only very small teeth. It is unlikely a non-venomous snake could cause the injury you describe. Not every snake bite is a clear cut two fang strike. Even a small amount of venom can cause swelling at the site. You might ask your dog's doctor about rattlesnake vaccine. It is manufactured in CA and vaccinated dogs have shown significantly less damage from snake bites.

Probably a bee or wasp. Your dog may have a bee sting allergy and the next sting could be more serious. Ask your vet what to do.

Bee or wasp? My dog got stung once and it swelled pretty bad.
