I’m placing this revised inquiry to get some detailed feedbacks; your participation is well valued. Since I live in the countryside, I run on dirt / grassy trails. The terrain is fairly flat with some rolling hills and good foothold, with few gravel areas.

My roommate is a member of the American Endurance Ride Conference and she does endurance riding on her 10-year-old Arabian gelding (15.2 hands). While I’m a marathon runner, she suggested that I tag along with her as she goes on her training rides. She indicated that she usually maintain a trot.

She revealed that she might preload her horse with electrolyte (“Endura-Max”). She took part in 25, 50, & multi-days events. She is currently preparing for an event call “Camp Far West”.

Seriously, is she pulling my leg? Should I take on her challenge? Would I be able to keep up with her?

It depends on how good you are. If you are a world class marathoner you should be able to keep up as her arabian should trot at approx. 8 - 10 mph.

Was it really a challenge or just wanting companionship on her ride?

I say go for it. What's the worst that can happen? If your roommate needs a horse to beat you then you have nothing to be ashamed of. If it's an invitation for a nice run I can't imagine you've been on many more interesting, or worth telling your kids about than the time you ran against a horse.

You could keep up for a time but not all day.
Arabs excell at endurance and most can go all day.
As for the Endura-Max that is just an electrolote to help with fluid absorbtion and mineral loss.
Good luck in your horse human race.

Not in your dreams. Arabian horses are the best of all endurance mounts, and you will be run into the ground by a well conditioned Arabian endurance horse! Give it a try and let us know how it goes, no?

I think you could keep up, under the proviso that she walks for a while to allow you to catch your breath every now and then. It's only training rides, and I think it would be kinda fun for both of you, just make sure you do bring enough for you to drink, as arabs can go all day.

Have fun :)
