I love polaroid cameras. I have about 4 different ones. The film is a bit expensive and sometimes hard to find.
I also have a regular APS camera and a wonderful Minolta digital. I use them all for different things (no, no nudie shots!). Polaroids are great for capturing instant moments. However the quality and clarity isn't as good as a digital.
I think you should get one, but don't buy the ones that have the tiny sized photos. Those are useless. My favourite model is "Polaroid One" which needs "600" film.
Great for parties or for design work. I don't know if bigger size is available, but perhaps the bigger the photo, the better.
Hope this helps a little!

I've just bought a digital camera after years of crappy point and shoots. I've had polaroid and disc cameras (remember them?) but the digital camera is absolutely mint. I only paid £150 but the picture quality is mint. My advice is get a reasonably priced digital camera. 5mp minimum. Buy a Polaroid for sentimental value but don't expect to take great cheap photos with it.

If you're looking for cool and retro, may I suggest a Holga. These cheap plastic cameras with their almost warped lenses and the 'from the hip' shooting style are positively cult classics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga
They still make them, too. Polaroid comes a distant second in my book. And I must agree with your dad that for a 'decent camera', you should go digital.

They are pretty cool, but the films are so expensive. The whole thing about polaroid is you can see the picture straight away but you can do that with digital ones.

Soon a Polaroid will be useless as you will not be able to get the film. I went digital a few years ago and have never looked back.

polaroid camera is obsolete...you can do immediate printing of photos by digital camera using photo printers at home...so it's a better bet to listen to your dad...don't waste your hard earned money on something which will not be useful anymore....

polaroid is good fun, also you can do things with polaroid not the instant 600 type but slightly older models and film types can be really arty.

films are expensive but the cameras are now dirt cheap! They are also brilliant fun at kids parties as the kids get the pics in their party bag!
