Jack Russells are very high energy and very trainable. A roomate once had one and it was adorable, but way to high energy for me...but if it had been trained better, then I would probably like her better.
Even better idea...why not go to your local humane society to see what kind of dogs they have. The one I valunteer at will let you foster the dog for a weekend to see if you both are compatible.

The extra time you place into workout you puppy the fewer they fall ill. Food is the gigantic price. We feed our boxer/pit combine approximately 50lbs a month of puppy meals that has plenty of protein (very predominant) and expenditures approximately $30/mo If you could have meals to be had, like perhaps your vicinity has a squirrel infestation your puppy can feed on (yeah, proper). Maybe you would retailer a little. But scraps of human meals can cross some distance. Ours eats the occasional apple that falls from our apple tree, and the apple tree turns out to do adequate on all of the poop the puppy presents. That's unfastened meals. Young puppies most of the time do not have many vet demands. Aside from spaying/neutering which I advocate, which expenditures approximately $one hundred-2 hundred, and the ordinary pictures are an extra $60 or so. Minor wellness disorders like infections, wounds, and worms are essentially the most normal. Most vet visits (a fair vet) are underneath $one hundred and more commonly comprise a unfastened comply with up examination. You could manage any such a 12 months. Mowing the acquaintances lawns as soon as every week might be greater than sufficient earnings to aid your puppy. The greatest price of puppy possession is time, now not cash. Taking care of a puppy, peculiarly whilst it's younger, and coaching it effectively is a gigantic assignment. It presents a great deal of present although and such a lot humans keep in mind it good valued at the trouble.

Good question, but not sure what you would interpret as "extreme" maintenance. If the dog is going to be kept indoors then you might want to avoid one that sheds, but the trade-off would likely mean that the dog would need to go to the groomer for a haircut every 4-6 weeks (I am thinking of an airedale or a standard schnauzer).
Go to a dog show and look at the different breeds and talk to the owners about the maintenance requirements.

If you want a high energy level dog you might try something like an airedale or a soft coated wheaten terrier. Dalmations crave lots and lots of exercise and are smooth coated. How about a border collie or australian shepherd - these dogs need lots to do to keep their minds and bodies active - very high energy.

Border collies are great and less maintenence than regular collies. Australian shepherds are also great. Both are very smart and active and don't need to be high maintenence. You could always go for a mixed breed, they're the best in my opinion.

I think you should go to the animal shelter and pick up a dog there. Mutts are usually healthier and smarter than purebreds and you can save a life AND a lot of money. I used to have a purebred German Shepherd and he had a bad case of hip displasia. I then got a mutt from the pound and he's the sweetest dog I've ever had.

Maybe a Boston terrier or something like that. I have a Cavalier King Charles. He is all of the things that you describe and when we play fetch, he will bring the ball and put it directly into my hand. You should look at some pics of them though because they tend to look more feminine in my opinion. I'm getting another in a couple weeks!!

If you wouldn't mind a big dog boxers are absolutely wonderful. Their calm, easy to train and they love to play. They are also very affectionate. You can't go wrong with. They surely are man's best friend.

I agree with Mackenzie that the Brittany Spaniel is a great dog for your needs since you don't want too large or too small.
