I microwave my water to a temperature which is comfortable for drinking. Enough tea seems to seep into the water but I'm wondering if it needs boiling water to be sterilized.

I would use boiling water and then cool it with some cold after making the tea, because tea has yeasts on it which would be killed by the boiling water. It might have some bacteria on it, but it shouldn't be anything you haven't already been exposed to if you've been drinking tea for a while. (It's possible that it's treated already to sterilize it but I'm not sure.) I was told to remove all yeasts from my diet as I had Candida in most of my organs!(But not in the piano! - haha).

Sterilize tea? Do you boil water for coffee to sterilize it? I just make my coffee in a coffeemaker - I don't think the water boils.
The reason for boiling water for tea goes back a long way - way before your time. It was and is a whole procedure. There was the silver tea set [or old teapot], and the water was put on to boil while the goodies were placed on a platter. When the water was boiling, a little was poured into the pot to 'warm it'. Then that water was poured off, the LOOSE tea measured in, and the boiling water poured over it. It was allowed to 'steep' for about 5 minutes - then poured into teacups. And served.
But I live alone, so I make my tea the way you do!!!!!

Personal choice now a days for the boiling thing. When I want to linger over the process, I boil the water. When I want to have a cup quickly, I microwave.

Although, the boiled water keeps its heat longer. Important on really cold days!

Not too important this time of year! :)

Any bacteria in yur water should be ok to drink as your city water dept. should do regular testing. You don't steralize for Kool-Aid or leamonade, and thats all OK. The main point of boiling water for tea is to aid in the extraction of the flavor from the tea leaves. The longer you boil or steep, the stronger the flavor.
