The cost is the same, so it doesn't matter.
I don't buy the car for racing. Safety is the top priority for me.

mazda 3 no doubt!

They are almost the same car, so the question is more one of style and dealership support than a true difference. The Focus is more likely cheaper (in the US that is) but the 3 has mor sporting character and style. The Focus has more body styles, such as a true wagon. The main difference in the US should be whether or not you like a sporting character to your car versus a lower price. You also want to look at dealerships and have a dealership you are comfortable with nearby. That may be a Ford dealership or Mazda dealership, depending on how you feel when visiting both places. Be sure to ask to see the service area, and try to talk to the service writers, as they will be your main customer service AFTER the purchase.

The only Focus I would take over a Mazda 3 would be the RS
If your not talking about that model, then go for the 3

Both earned a Recommended rating from Consumer Reports. The Mazda is more reliable. The Focus had serious reliability issues early on though these seem to have been solved.

It is the same car. I prefer the Focus, as I can get it cheaper, but Mazda is a good car too. It depends on the price and in the offers from the dealership.

Although the Focus is a fairly decent economy car with good drivability, the Mazda 3 is a much more well-rounded car. More fun to drive, more reliable, better resale value. Oh yeah, it's better looking too.

Browse other cars in this price range too. Test drive, test drive, test drive -and- have fun...

Happy shopping!
