NATO (North Atlantic Treaty organization) came about in the late 1940's by the Western European countries (and the U.S.) as a counter measure to the Soviet expansion (the Eastern Bloc). For almost 50 years, it served as a powerful deterrent to the Soviets during the cold war. It is more military than economic while the European Union deals mostly with political and economic matters.

Since the break up of the communist bloc, NATO has been struggling to redefine its purpose. Several of the former communist countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia), have been admitted into NATO. You can probably find a roster of it membership by searching the Internet. The last 15 years, NATO takes on more of a peace keeping role such as in Kosovo.

Both previous answers are pretty much correct except France is not a member of Nato having left early on because of its nationalism and opposition to what it saw as creeping American imperialism.
