From a Catholic's point of view, not just any sin will send you straight to hell. Only mortal sins can do that.
A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.
People die all the time with venial sins on their conscience and they will go to heaven.
With love in Christ.

One cannot "adpot" answers to religious questions outside thier own religious faith otherwise then we create our own "laws" in what we can or cannot do in order to get to "heaven".
As a christian person, I believe MOST of the scriptures is open for interpretation. I do not think there are absolute rights and wrongs in MOST of the writings. Hence the reason for the Protestant Reformation, even though I am Catholic myself.
Baptism in the Catholic faith is absolution from original sin to allow a newborn soul a clean slate to get into heaven. It is up to that person as to how clean they keep it in life.
As a Catholic, I do not agree with telling me that the only way I can have my sins absolved is through priest who is in the same boat as I am in this world. Christ is the final judge in the end of days, I believe only he can absolve if you truely repent. People can be fooled by false repentence, Christ can't be.
I also believe humanity no matter what faith will get to the "other side" whatever it is as long as one does right and good to thier fellow neighbor. There maybe a "waiting room" for all souls until judgement day, but no one has ever come back to tell everyone else what to expect.

After you have accepted Christ into your heart, it is your responsibility to be as sinless as possible. If we do sin, which we all will because of our stubborm human nature, we must ask God for forgiveness. The walk with Christ is a lifetime comittment of prayer and service, it's not just a one-shot deal where you accept Christ and then go about whatever you were doing before that. Yes, people do this and unfortunately they will enter into Heaven, but the theory that I have heard is that ones rewards are much greater if they actually live a Godly life as they are supposed to. Our mission as Christians is to bring others to Him. When we die, He will have the opportunity to show us what we could have done. I myself am opposed to Catholicism because it clearly states in the bible that we are to confess our sins directly to God, among other things. 1 John 1:9

When a person is baptized, they are born again into a new life where they follow God. But we are still human & will sin...it's our nature. But the thing is, we are to ask God to forgive us & here is the big thing...being forgiven means we should repent, meaning we don't go & commit what we asked to be forgiven for again. And a human can not forgive us for our sins...only God can do that through Jesus Christ, because Jesus paid for all our sins when he died on the cross & rose again. That is why He is there...to interceed for us to God the Father. Though we will never be perfect, we are to keep reaching for that goal.
Good luck & God Bless!

In my church, we believe that you are baptized for the remission of your sins...after baptism you can ask for forgiveness for all of your sins and God will grant that. But when you are baptized you also have to repent, which means you give up a life of sin. In doing so, you will mess up from time to time, but you still have to walk a Christian life. After baptism you can't go back to sin. You can ask for forgiveness though as long as you repent, and give up whatever it is. For instance, if you make the mistake of insulting someone, you ask for forgiveness, but then you ask God to help you not to do that anymore. You belong to Him now and He wants you to live a holy life.
