"Re-heal itself?"
Dude... you have some serious misconceptions. First of all, I don't think that global warming will result in the extinction of the human race. A serious contraction, but not an extinction.
Secondly, the words "re-heal" implies that there is a normal operating state that the earth is supposed to operate within... I don't think this is true. The earth is 4.3 billion years old. Life has existed for the last billion or so years... human life, only the last 100,000-150,000 years. The earth's climate has been all over the map.
The bottom line is that as long as there is plant life that will convert CO2 into O2, then there is a chance that the level of CO2 will drop and the level of O2 will rise.

The earth will certainly heal.
However, don't write-off man so easily. The main problem we face is the survival of our civilisation. We need to create a sustainable way of life, such that the extinction rate of species returns to its normal level.
If civilisation collapses, some humans will survive ( maybe 1 to 5%) and the human race will continue, but reduced to the hunter gatherer lifestyle. All our knowledge and technology will be lost. A new civilisation will emerge in a few hundred years, during which time nature will make quite a recovery anyway (new forests - about 150 years; fisheries perhaps 30 years) This civilisation will have a better chance of being sustainable because it will not have access to all the easy resources we have used up, e.g. oil and minerals, so its technology will be more basic and benign than we have achieved with cheap energy and materials.
Remember that nature is in a process of constant change anyway, so it is not a case of returning to a previous state, but moving on to a new level of biodiversity.

it will heal while we are still here. as warming continues, less farm land, less food, starvation, fewer people, less pollution. it is a closed, self-regulating system.
