This has happened to me. I immediately turn it in to someone in authority, like the post office (where I found a credit card once) or one of my supervisors at work. In general, I do pick it up and don't wait for someone in authority to do that part of the recovery process. A few times, I have found a loose bunch of credit cards and such. If it is just one item, I mail it to the owner. If it is a bunch of things, I have been known to phone the person, tell them how I got the things and where I found them -- that person thanked me and immediately retrieved the items. A few times too, I have mailed the items to the police station. And yes, sometimes I do this anonymously. I suppose I have a fear that they will blame me for the theft, but I am still concerned about the victim and what they are going through.

Look them up and return it and remember how youd feel if it was yours that got lost. And how wonderful you feel once you return it too.

I once left my entire purse money and all in my shopping cart because my kids were crying about bumping their heads on the same pole they both walked into looking back at the car to see how far they walked. They were 2 and 3 at the time so my hands were full. Well a lady called me and told me she saw my kids and what I was going threw and for me to leave my purse was natrual to forget about when dealing with my babies. I went to get my purse and this lady had called out and bought me a dozen roses to make my day better. I thought that was the sweetest thing anyone had done for me in a long time!

Write them or look them up in the phone book. keeping it isn't a good thing, you will feel guilty and ashamed about it down the road. Don't let greed hurt someone else. This is a lesson for you, don't fail the lesson by doing what you already know isn't right.
Besides, you will probably get a reward by doing the right things.

I'd go thru it, look at the Olan Mills pics of their family, the random scrap of paper with a phone number on it...

... I'd snoop a little!

Then I'd call the # on their drivers liscence. It would probably be out of service (I dont keep MY drivers liscence completely current!).

Then, I'd call any other phone numbers I could find. I'd try maybe looking them up in the phone book.

I'd make a good attempt to find the owner.
I'd even look on craigslist to see if it had been reported stolen, and probably call the nonemergency police line to report it "found".

I would return it, intact, unless it belonged to someone despicable, like my Congressman. In that case, I would take the cash and then drop the credit cards in a dirt poor neighborhood.

what would you want someone to do with your wallet? Return it of course, if not, turn it into the cops. After 30 days, i believe its yours.

first check the id card whether their is any contact no. and try to contact him/her and then hand it over to him/her by asking some question to identify whether he is the real owner of the property and then i will had it over to him/her.I would like to give a real time example.

Once one of my friend found a bus pass and some valuable papers in the bus he brought them to the office and saw wht it contains of and then he found that he belongs to the place where i live so he asked me to check, when i saw a contact no. then immediately i called her and told her that i found her bag.The very next day she came to my office and took her things and she appreciated me and my friend for this and from that time onwards she became a friend of mine.
