Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. It can serve as a cross-training element to your regular workouts.
Swimming does burn calories at a rate of about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight.
If you want to tone your body too. You need to do it with different exercise.

Swimming is an excellent cardio workout, plus it is great for muscle toning not only in your arms and legs, but your back as well. Water therapy is used a lot for people instead of weights, plus it is healthier in some ways.
Take it slow until you can build yourself up to a good lap regimine.

It's the best. No impact, no excessive water loss through sweat and just about every muscle in the body is exercised at the same time. It's also the most strenuous so never swim alone.

Yes swimming is a good cardio workout.
I think that you should use both systems though.
Each one by itself is never enough.
That and you use different muscle groups through out your body with each workout.

You are moving arms and legs - lots of big muscles.
Don't replace, alternate...
There are also tons of exercises you can do in a pool. There are pool weights made of sponge or styrofoam that help the work out.

Yes because it's great for your heart with little to no impact on your joints. (Ever hear of someone getting a knee injury while swimming?)
