I just HAD to have one! This is probably the most compact revolver in the .454 caliber. I know it's intended for hunting, but I intend to use it for personal protection(in my home, not concealed carry) My question is, which cartidges(brand name) will produce the least amount of recoil? The dealer really didn't seem to know.

For general Ruger .454 info, look at John Taffin's article at http://www.sixguns.com/range/454_super_redhawk.htm. When you buy this gun are you really worried about recoil? Your biggest concern is going to be over-penetration - concentrate on that first. Not only do you not want your bullets to find your neighbor's home, but you don't want to shoot a family member in another room by mistake. When I looked at penetration results for buckshot, I changed my home defense shotgun ammo to smaller pellets.Whatever you decide, DO NOT use reloads for self defense. If you ever have to use it for that, it will be much easier to explain how you went down to the local bullets 'r us and picked up a box of ammo like everyone else. If a prosecutor is out to make a case at any cost, he will paint you as a nut hiding out in the basement conjuring up super bullets, created only for killing your innocent fellow man. American Handgunner has had some articles on this very issue.

Well if you have to have one, fine. But please reconsider using it for home defense.

Broadly speaking, your home's outer brick wall will stop any .38 Special bullet. Your neighbor's outer brick wall will stop any .357 Magnum bullet. How many brick walls do you think your .454 Casull will penetrate?

If you are concerned about recoil, then you should consider a smaller gun. I've had excellent luck with Federal but I am not recoil shy. I've seen .454 Casull ammo also made by Hornady, so I don't think you have a whole lot of different brand choices. Do a web search for .454 Casull ammo.

I hope you live way out in the sticks where your nearest neighbor is 10 miles away!

That is what the .454 Casull Alaskan was made for. And the ..480 Ruger is just more of a good thing.

if you're really looking for a recoil reduction, then why are you so interested in such a massive caliber?you must really want to get someone badly!
maybe you should reconsider your choice for home defense, like the one responder said, unless you think someone is going to break in driving an armored personnel carrier!if not, then try the .45 lc the guy with the redhawk told you about.....

The Super Redhawk in .454 will also shoot a .45 long colt which has less recoil.

You have to load your own, fill some cases up with a minimal amount of powder and a huge grain bullet JHP. Knock anyone not wearing body armor on their ***.

the only way to reduce recoil is to get used to it or reload your own ammo
