It was about money, enriching the rich, does that sound familiar it is the same reason we are in Iraq. We lost because we never had a plan for winning. That should sound familiar also

After reading many of the answers I'm inclined to believe that the USA involved itself in Vietnam because our Congress felt it was a nice thing to do.
It was a nice place to send our soldiers. It was nice and warm, the hills were nicely forested, the beaches were not crowded, the food was delicious and different, and the people were nice...in the daytime.
For most of the soldiers who were sent there it was a real special vacation. They liked it very much and most of them made it a special point to re-enlist to serve many terms there.
You can see that my conclusion about Vietnam, that was drawn from many of the answers to the Question, "Why did we go into Vietnam", is as far off-base.
Someone said, "If we can't learn anything from our history we will surely repeat our faults over and over again."
Welcome to the 21st Century, America. Hope you have a nice trip.

The original incursion into Vietnam was in support of the French who wished to regain their colonial empire after the withdrawal of the Japanese troops. While we didn't fight, we supported the French. Ho Chi Minh approached Rooseveldt and Truman for aid to rebuff the French but he was rebuffed and when his 'communist' party ousted the French, Vietnam was divided by the Geneva Accords into North and South Viet-nam (the south was led by a French puppet Emperor named Bao Dai )and they had a sham election and the US-backed candidate named Ngo Dien Diem became Presiident...corrupt, Catholic (Vietnam is Buddhist) and a brother...archbishop, and a moralistic sister-in-law named Madame Ngu...to support our new puppet and to suppress the communist attacks, we began inserting American troops (later Diem was a major liability and we assassinated him) and Kennedy wanted to withdraw our troops but he too was assassinated, and Johnson pressed by major corporations sent more and more troops in....when I first arrive in 195\65, the war cost only $1,000,000 a day....when I left, it cost $100,000,000 a day and we were totally ineffective with all of our fighting and civic action programs.

You went because the French had lost to the Viet Minh and the world was afraid of creeping communism in the region (domino theory), and you lost because the media turned the american public against the soldiers.
The U.S did not lose a single battle.

To stop the Red Menace from spreading it's policies around the world . Besides , we were not at war with anyone else at the time !! I always wondered why we did not enforce the Monroe Doctrine and invade Cuba when the Soviet Union backed Castro regime was installed .

We stopped communism? You have got to be kidding. Unified Viet Nam is a completely communist nation.
The reason the US got involved in Viet Nam was the misguided perception that there would be a domino effect of Viet Nam turning communist.
And the US got it's as s beat there, to the tune of over 50 thousand soldiers dead... We are relearning the same lesson in Iraq.

Communists were threatening to take over the south(a bit like Korea)and so the US went in to stop it but they couldnt handle it so they left and the communists basically won and this why America is afraid of North Korea

We went to Vietnam of course to stem the tide of communism, but we also helped the French get out of their quagmire there. They were getting slaughtered and we saved their butts again.

We went for the same reason we went to Korea (and most other places). We withdrew because of negative reporting by our own media, and because the military was not permitted to fight to win by Kennedy and Johnson. Militarily it was a victory, politically a farce.
