The name, Rhode Island, actually refers to the largest island in Narragansett Bay, also known as Aquidneck Island, on which the city of Newport is located. Some historians think that Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano named it Rhode Island because of its similarity in shape to the Greek island of Rhodes. Rhode Island is nicknamed "The Ocean State".

It was a colony settled by Roger Williams in the early 1600's. The original towns were actually on islands and peninsulas on the coast... hence the island name.
