my maiden name. I know there is a village called El Ferrol in Portugal. How did we get the name?

Ferrol is commonly used in Ireland but it could go back to Spain in the moars time.

I didn't know which one you wanted. Ferrol is Gaelic to mean famous men.

errol, El[el fArOl´] Pronunciation Key, city (1990 pop. 86,272), A Coruna prov., NW Spain, in Galicia. The naval base on the Atlantic was built in the 18th cent. and is one of the most important in Spain. Shipbuilding and ironworks are the main industries. Francisco Franco, El Caudillo, was born there, and from 1939 to the early 1980s it was known as El Ferrol del Caudillo.

There is a Spanish surname of Ferrol, but in searching through Ancestry.com the most common nationality is Irish. The census records from 1841 forward show Irish origins for the surname. Most of the passenger lists also show Irish immigrants with this surname:
