i have 3 teenage sons. they all have gone through or are going through that teenage angst thing where they think they know it all and i know nothing at all. i have only a few rules to offer that have worked for us all:

1. they understand without fail that i love them.
2. while i am much older, they know that i am not stupid and know much more than they do and i remind them when i need to that 'as where they are, i have been'.
3. i will bend but will not break and they understand my limits (see the answer from your first response to your question).
4. i am the ultimate yes or no as they live in my house, wear the clothes that i buy them, eat the food that i have furnished, etc.
5. most important ... they understand without fail that i love them.

to be an effective parent takes work, real work, and at times hard work. good luck with raising your children to learn that they will make a difference in the world, positive or negative, they will make a difference.

They would find out next time they want something, I can ignore their requests as well. I'm the parent and what I say goes. That's how I handled my teenagers and they gave me no back talk or problems. They tried to get stubborn about some things and I solved that problem real easily...I just got more stubborn than they did.

think of the time when you were at their age... how did you feel then with regards to everything (e.g. you felt you are always being blamed, too many rules, punishments...here and there, etc.)?
yes, now we know our parents did these out of love, to us to teach us discipline, and make straight our path.
but the question is... did we understood everything then? i think we need to see things from their own perspective too. in this way, we may have a better picture of what and who are our children.
i have a daughter who is in college, 2nd yr high, and 2 in the elementary. im having a ball with them, even if i impose rules around the house... they are still my friends (special friends).
check-out your approach on every situation with your teenager. that might be the place to start your search for your million dollar question. then, proceed backward in time to better understand your dillema.
then go back to the present and face your problems with a new perspective and outlook.

how did your parents handle this when you where growing up? did it work? can you apply the same tactics? they will come to you when they NEED something like money, then take that moment to talk to them about the problem. until then ignore them. and let them see that it does not stress you out. but be firm and don't give in to any childish behavior. it's like a 2 year old throwing a fit don't give in or it will continue

i have 17 yr old twin boys AND a nineteen yr old daughter...i too suffer from this...they only want to talk when they a/needmoney b/need ride c/are sick d/i am on phone e/asleep...haha i always try to grab those opportunities however when i try to talk and get ignored sometimes i keep talking...my boys thought life would better with jerk dad who just came home from 13 yr prison...i cried let them go and they are back unsupervised during that time they dont want to follow rules but in a way i believe they want that structure advice etc..i grab every opportunity to listen and give respect when i dont agree its hard to be calm but it helps daughter thinks i know nothing but often ask 4 advice and then trashes it and me hurtful but i try to rmbr that she is usually unhappy about something that has nothing to do with me..i heard once that children who feel safe at home lash out and act out at home cuz its family who will never leave them it safe...and then they behave correctly outside of home..true for me i get compliments on all 3 for manners and respect..so i tuff up and always love them...email me at blondemarysusan@yahoo.com good luck

firstly....you must be belonging to some western country!!!!!!!
coz am an indian..and here parents children and family as a whole have quite a strong bonding....so its in your society structure....
but ignoring your parents.!!....that so disgusting......GO SLAPPPPTHEM HARD!!!!!!!!!!!HOW DARE THEY...

is is said that god can't be everywhere so he created "MOTHER"

but the reason is simply this....your children ignore you coz they must be too independent........
MAKE THEM DEPEND ON YOU........THERE MUST BE THINGZ THAT THEY CAN'T DO WITHOUT YOU.....

THEIR FOOD....CASH.....ANYTHING. THAT SHOWS THEM YOUR HAVE AN IMPORTANCE IN THEIR LIFE..

SHOW THEM YOU ARE THE AUTHORITY IN HOUSE....YOUR THE BOSS......

DONOT INSULT THEM BUT SHOW THEM YOU ARE ALSO AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THEIR LIVES WITHOUT WHICH THEY CANNOT DO....

TELL THEM CHILDREN HOWSOEVER OLD THEY BECOME.......THEY'LL STILL BE YOUR CHILDREN AND YOU THEIR MOM......

MOTHER-THE ONE WHO GAVE YOU LIFE.....MOTHER IS EVEN ABOVE GOD!
