It's a method of connecting to the internet. It uses a dedicated line solely for connecting a computer to the internet (unlike a dial-up connection which may be shared with a conventional telephone).
The technology that broadband uses means it can work much faster than a conventional connection and a web-page that may take a minute to load using a dial-up connection could be loaded in a second using a broadband connection.
Broadband comes into it's own when downloading large files such as music or video - instead of waiting several minutes or even hours the file can be downloaded in a few seconds.
It's also of great benefit to people who use the internet a lot. If it means a webpage loads in 1 second rather than 10 then these time savings soon add up.
The fastest readily available broadband connections are 8 and 10 Megabits per second (8000 and 10000 units of data per second) whereas a standard dial-up connection would be 56 Kilobits per second (56 units of data per second) - so you can see there's a big difference in speed.
One common mistake that people make is to measure their internet connection speed in Megabytes and Kilobytes - it's not, it's Megabits and Kilobits, there's an 8 fold difference.

In my case it's a way to connect to the internet slightly different than regular dial up. It's through my phone company, has an external modem that switches signals and whatever else, allowing my usual dial up connection speed of 56 K to be increased to 512 K approximately,,, which allows a bit more speed. It's best used as a cable hookup, whcih increases speeds even more.

"In general, broadband refers to telecommunication in which a wide band of frequencies is available to transmit information. Because a wide band of frequencies is available, information can be multiplexed and sent on many different frequencies or channels within the band concurrently, allowing more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time (much as more lanes on a highway allow more cars to travel on it at the same time). Related terms are wideband (a synonym), baseband (a one-channel band), and narrowband (sometimes meaning just wide enough to carry voice, or simply "not broadband," and sometimes meaning specifically between 50 cps and 64 Kpbs)."

Think of it as a pipe with a bunch of little pipes connecting to it. Broadband is a pipe that can hook more little ones to it because it is much larger and faster.
