Actually historically it is a phase.
From judasim of Prophet Moses
christianity was born through Prophet Jesus and the next step
was Islam from Prophet Mohammed.
Just imagine if everyone excepted this real history.
Dare to?

Bob,
It is very easy to stereotype. Not everyone who follows the teachings of Jesus, and call Him Master, are Christians. The faith you call Christianity, did not come into existence until the year 325A.D. at the Council of Nicea. You should read about it. Anyway, there are a few, who have returned to the reason Jesus came here to begin with. He brought us a message, that was simple and elegant. "The Kingdom of God is within you". When we come to God, as humble children, and invite Him into our lives, He places His Spirit in us, and bonds with us. We become new creatures, part mortal, part Immortal. The old values of materialism and fear, fall away. Love and Wisdom, become the foundation of all our choices. We have embarked on the Path of Eternity, and we will never be the same again. Far from the "Stasis" that you have suggested, true followers of "The Way" have begun a spiritual adventure, without end. As the Spirit grows within us, we become more and more like our Father. The Universe is a big place. It is going to take an eternity to explore and enjoy it's beauty. This will not be accomplished by mortals.

Power.
Let's say a creationist made an effort to really understand evolution. They'd pretty quickly realise that the evolution model fits the real world about 563,396,950 times better then that kiddie story creationism version (noah build an ark to save all the animals - he took 2 of each species - WHAT THE F@#K?!? there's like over 10 million species of animals - that musta been a big boat =] )
But lets say your a pastor running an orthodox church - it's in your best interests to get as many people as possible to literally believe every word of the bible because they go "yay! we're saved from impending doom!" and then tithe 10% of their income to you :)
If the pastor goes "hey this whole satan invading the earth bit in the bible is a pile of rubbish. Infact you really don't need this book at all since most of it is common sense. heck why do we even bother with this church?" well you can see how that would affect business :o]
note - Most christians I've met are cool. I think the bible has cool bits in it. I just happen to stongly agree with the question - christians really do need to be honest and drop the BS factor out of their religion and dive into some real spirtual growth

This is the reason why church attendances are falling and the reason for the quickly swelling ranks of the new age faiths; where the onus is on the individual to seek out his own truths.
Faith in God is as healthy as it ever was, yet is not practiced in church as often as it once was.
Faith is a highly individualistic thing, just as we are all individuals; we seek our own path to enlightenment, not blindly follow someone elses.
The great religions had their place in secular society, though now with global communications, we have the power to gather our own truths and tailor our beliefs.
With each passing day, month, year and lifetime we evolve.
As individuals we do this at different rates as each lesson is learned, yet the formal religions treat us as if we were all at the same point in our search for the truth, for they have not evolved.
I leave you with a quote from silver birch, a great spirit guide: " THERE ARE MANY PATHWAYS LEADING TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD, IT IS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL TO CHOOSE WHICH THEY FIND THE MOST COMFORTABLE TO TRAVEL".
Love and Light

I don't know why you believe as christian we are not curious and search for further truth.. We will test "new" things against the scale we already posses (the Bible). We refuse to be blown around by every "new" doctrine that is "discovered". Just because something is of ancient origin that doesn't make it God's word..

From an illogically sane character I was once puzzling over why the object is referred to as an hourglass whilst it's only ready of measuring four or 7 mins. I could purchase an hour glass that has the mins marked on it.

Christians have continued to study, research and increase their knowledge in those areas. In fact, there is actual an entire branch of science dedicated to the study of religion. It is called theology. The same universities that offer degrees in physics, archeology and "rocket science" offer degrees in theology. (What's manthaticians? I couldn't find that one listed in my college cataloges?)
Does the average Christian continue on to learn? Of course. That's what they have pastors and priest for, to teach them what they do need to know. You have heard of churches, right?
The average bank teller, who works with numbers 40 hours a week probably could not discuss the difference between an real and an imaginary number. The average pharmacist could not detail the latest research into efforts to alter the human genome throught medication. The average engineer could draw the schematics for the air recycling system of the internation space station. And they don't need to in order to do the jobs they are called to do. (No insult intended to any of the people listed)
The average Christian does not need to understand the relationsip between the angle of the placement of the keystone of a Mayan temple and the fourth ring of Stonehedge to be able to love and worship God. They can do the job they are called to without it. They are called to be world changers - beginning with their own hearts.
Besides, God never gave us the job of winning people's heads. He gave us the more important job of winning their hearts. Do that, and you get the head for free. If you would like to have a heart changing encounter with God, I will be glad to help you. Contact me by e-mail. Or you can go straight to God himself. He is real good about answering knee-mail

Because after all of the scientists, archaeologists, physicists, and NASA have completed their investigation...the search for the Truth...they're going to arrive at the same conclusion that Christians already have.
