I've used an escrow service to purchase a vehicle online and had a flawlessly safe experience. You have to research or know someone who has used it before you trust one to be of service to you, but there are trustworthy companies available.

I would recommend an escrow service on a large ticket item that the buyer and seller would take a big loss if the other side was a crook.

They are expensive, but you can negotiate with the buyer as to whom pays for (or shares) their fees.

Yes, IF you use a reliable escrow service. There are plenty of fly-by-night escrow services on the net. Use a brick and mortar escrow service; the ones that do real estate transactions will be happy to do a vehicle transfer for you. So will any attorney for a couple hundred bucks. Your bank may also provide this service for very little cost.
