It is probably a "fasting lipids test" which is the blood tests which checks your cholesterol, HDL, LDL, etc. (the fat levels in your blood). These have to be done when you have been fasting (no food or drink after midnight). Fasting blood sugars tell the doctor what your level of sugar is without any food in your system. If it is high, you could be diabetic.

Do not eat or drink anything for 12 hours - that includes coffee! You may have water. A fasting lipid profile is for cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL. These are a measure of your good and bad 'fats' that can lead to clogged arteries and heart problems. Your doctor may have ordered a fasting blood sugar as well - though that is not usually included in a fasting lipid test. A fasting blood sugar can be used as a screening test for diabetes, but additional testing would have to be done to verify the condition.

Lipids are fatty acids most likely your doctor is looking for cholesterol levels. Google lipids or lipids testing for more info. Diabetics keep track of all there blood work once a year but lipids do not test for diabetes. If you were having a glucose tolerance test or a HbA1c test that would be the indicator doc is looking for diabetes.

usually a fasting blood test is done in the am, like 9 am. Fasting usually means nothing to eat or drink after a specific time the night before. Usually 10pm, 11pm, or 12am - depending on when the test appt. is.

best of luck.

The hospital lab asks that you have nothing-by-mouth after midnight the night before you go to have your blood drawn. This means water, food, and sometimes medications. If you have to take blood pressure or heart medications, call the lab and ask if you should take your pills with a sip of water.
