To really figure out if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable, you need to know what makes a fruit a fruit, and a vegetable a vegetable. The big question to ask is, DOES IT HAVE SEEDS?

If the answer is yes, then technically, you have a FRUIT. This, of course, makes your tomato a fruit. It also makes cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts all fruits as well. VEGETABLES such as, radishes, celery, carrots, and lettuce do NOT have seeds (that are part of what we eat) and so they are grouped as vegetables

I see fruit as something with seeds, and vegetables as green things. Also, fruits are sweet. And that fruits grow on trees, with the exception of berries. Some examples that might be a little in the middle are tomatoes (grow on vines), cucumbers (green with seeds), and peppers (have seeds).

A fruit develops from the blossom of the plant or tree and its seeds develop inside it. Vegetables don't develop from blossoms. They develop on the plant, usually beginning below ground, and the plant develops flowers that become seed pods or seed bearing stems. Or, the vegetable grows and reproduces itself from its root, as with potatoes which develop and mature underground. It's the same with onions and carrots, although the last two develop seeds on the plant.

A fruit is defined as "strictly, the ripened ovary of a plant and its contents. More loosely, the term is extended to the ripened ovary and seeds together with any structure with which they are combined."

"Vegetable" on the other hand does not have a scientific definition, only a popular definition. And veggies can come from any part of the plant - the root, leaves, fruit, etc...

Fruit contains seeds (plural)
Vegetables contain no seeds and come from a stalk, vine or bush.

Potatoes and carrots do not have seeds, so are Vegetables
Tomatoes and apples contain seeds, so are fruits

Tomatoes are Fruits in a scientific Botanical sense, but are vegetables in a culinary (cooking) sense.
