My son was thinking of a banchmade knife but I thought I would check around and see if thee were better knives. He leaves for Iraq the middle of October and I want to get it before then. He wants a hardened, fixed, black knife... are there any that have extra features or is that a bunch of hoopla? I could use some advice... thanks!

Thank you for your concern for my sons safety. We do worry, but he was born to serve for this purpose. It's in his blood. Besides, he would have to go awol to not go to Iraq and that is worse than death.

If money is no object and you want the Rolex of combat knives, you can't beat a Randall....Check them out at "randallknives.com" ..Then ask some of the experts your son serves with, they will know about Randall's...
God's speed to your son and the men he serves with...

Look, I spent some time in Lebanon in 1983. Might I suggest that you take your son with you to your local VFM. These are the ladies and gentlemen who can give you all the skinny on the pros and cons of cutlery choice.
My preference is the USMC K-BAR. Olean makes a version as well. Cuts com. wire, tires, aluminum cans, and MRE containers.
They are inexpensive yet durable. Can be thrown with practice or used as a Kentucky boxing glove. It will do the close in, dirty work if needed.

There are some great knives at wilsontactical.com, but you pay for workmanship. I have had Cold Steel knives that I really liked and I have a Benchmade folder that I cary almost every day. I know Benchmade is making some fixed blade knives that have gotten some great reviews.

CRKT (Columbia River Knives) makes an Operation Iraqi Freedom folder. It is the most popular folder among soldiers right now. The benchmade fixed is ok, but I would look at SOG and ColdSteel also.

A regular old marine kbar knife would do. But he's going to have some issues getting things through customs..
When I was deployed to saudi arabia there was a whole list of things we couldn't bring with us. If he needs a knife while he is there then a knife will be issued to him.

I would recomend a SOG Seal. It has been approved and chosen to be the main combat knife by the United States Navy Seals. if its good enough for them i believe it will serve your son very well.

Find something that has tungsten in the blade or is pure tungsten. that'll make it virtually unbreakable. They're expensive, but worth every penny. They can even cut through the roof of a car. I don't remember any name brands, but do a Yahoo search on them, you'll find some.
