Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, charaterised by hyperreactive airways, resulting in narrowing of airways and resultant shortness of breath. There is often inflammation and swelling of the tissues of your airways (especially at times of infections by virus) which exacerbate the existing airway obstruction. Cortisone is a steroid medication which acts as an anti-inflammatory, thereby reducing the inflammation and swelling of the airways.

I also have a breathing problem, and it came on suddenly. I was told I had adult-onset asthma, then emphysema, three years later, getting worse, a second opinion at Mt Sinai in NYC was sarcoidosis, a disease of inflammation that prohibits deep inhalation because of inability to exhale enough (obstruction) For the sarcoid I was put on Prednisone, a steroid (cortisone) with nasty side effects that is supposed to combat the inflammation of Sarcoid, thus helping you breathe - didn't do much for me, so I had to use supplemental oxygen. I really can empathize with you. After MT SINAI, I went to Yale Medical, and then Mayo Clinic -both suggested Bronchiolitis. And at Mayo I found out my heart valve (Mitral) was worse than I previously was told, and it could have caused my whole lung condition. If you haven't had a second opinion, PLEASE DO! And make sure your HEART is looked at, it can cause pulmonary hypertension and/or back pressure on the oxygenated blood coming in from the lungs. After Mayo I tapered off Prednisone, current meds are Advair, Albuterol (rescue med dilates (opens) airways VERY quickly) and Atrovent (similar to Spiriva), was on Foradil several months - no help. It's my understanding that inhaled cortizones are Advair and Flovent, not Spiriva or Foradil. Good luck to you.

one thing that will help if you are over weight then try and lose some of this weight and that will also help with the breathing so your body will not have to work so hard.
i feel for you and hope that this helps

I am going to join a support group and see is that helps. I always figured it would be depressing.

it helps with the inflammation in your airway. It opens it up more so that you breathe easier.
