A vegetarian diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans and low in fats (especially animal fats) will: keep your blood sugar at a more constant level, make it easier for you to keep off unwanted weight, and
provide delicious alternatives to high-fat treats.

See a nutritionist. Thats the best thing.

I had gestational diabetes and was mostly eating vegetarian but did not know where to start either but the nutritionist really helped.

Here are some useful sites..
You will also need to speak with your doctor, and have him give you a prescription to visit with the nutritionist at the hospital,
They will help you with the proteins that you'll need.
(Most) Vegetables lower our blood sugar, meat (protein) keeps our blood sugar level.. carbs just make it rise..
Good luck to you with the diabetes.. I have it as well, type 2.

Try this website:

I'm a hypoglycemic vegetarian. It works well, and I feel great. I eat lots of small, protein-packed meals. I get the protein from dairy, beans including soy, nuts & nut butters, quinoa, and dark green leafy veggies. You're going to feel and look great! By the way, my mom is older than you and she went from Atkins to Vegetarian, and her weight dropped off and she looks awesome and so young. :o) Good Luck!
