His bad breath may be caused by his high blood sugar levels, which can make someone have breath that smells like he's been out drinking cheap booze all night. That will go away as his diabetes is treated.

My son gets fingernail remover smelling breath smells bad that is when he is really high and is in Key-tone acidosis. As long as he is being treated mention it to doctor could be more than just diabetes. First year is the hardest find a local Juvenile Diabetes Support Group other parents and there experience are priceless tools and give foresight that you can not read about. Become your own expert knowledge is power the better you understand it the better you can help your son stay in controll and avoid complications.

The bad breath is from the ketones, Make sure he is brushing and flossing 3-4 times a day.
I have type 1 diabetes too.
teach him can take care of this & live a long happy life.
He may be to sick at first to care but he needs to learn to manage this diease himself with you as his back up.

When the diabetes will be under control the bad breath will go away. It is natural if your son has diabetes since its a syntom. Good luck for your son.

One of the important signs of high blood sugar in type1 is ketoacidosis which cause the bad breathing smell (fruit smell) once your child treated properly this smell will not come again but remember this signs mean hyperglycemia this mean your child may need insulin,ask your doctor about it and what to do if it happens
