Well it obviously has an important role to play. The fact that it is a plastic replica of something and is still incorporated in the pack affirms this.

Actually, I have seen at some sushi bars the sushi chef cut decorations out of a kind of plant leaf. I don't know which kind of leaf but it looked to me something like the banana leaf they use in some asian kitchens to steam food in. I think the plastic decoration refers to that. On top of that, the green color contrasts the pink to red colour of the raw fish (for example salmon, tuna or tuna belly) which then looks fresher.

it's not plastic it's actually a spare piece of seaweed to keep the sushi fresh

just decorative. Green usually accents food nicely, and the plastic junk doesn't wilt.

Funny...that's what I am eating for lunch! It is in there for decorative purposes only.....it adds color and helps fill up the container, along with the ginger, wasabi and orange slices. YUMMY!

It is only used for presentation. The Japanese take great pride in presenting food at it's best.
