I just had an intolerance test (www.epilight.co.uk/alcat.htm) and it threw up haricot and string beans, but I can't find ANY information on what variety Heinz uses! I need to know in case I die!! (ok, slight over reaction). Thank you!

Most commercial tinned baked beans such as Heinz are made from navy beans, a variety of Phaseolus vulgaris, and sold in tomato sauce. Tinned baked beans are often mistakenly thought of as haricot beans (for example, [1]), but Heinz describes their product as "Canadian navy beans" [2], which are very similar to haricots but slightly larger.

Heinz baked beans uses white beans for its product.
A little history......
The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, is popular in France, and traditionally the main bean of Anglo-America, used in such dishes as Boston baked beans.
Navy bean varieties include:
Robust
Rainy River
Michelite
Sanilac
Other white beans are Cannellini and Great Northern.
Hope this helps!

You can substitute almost any kind of bean for kidney beans--but if she cannot eat beans at all, go to your health food store or natural foods store and look for a product called TVP--Textured vegetable protein. It's like granola--but you add water and soak it until it's soft and you can use it for almost any meat substitution. Or the Morning Star Farms company makes a product called "crumbles" (found in the freezer) which can also be used the same way.
