Its been a year since my dog got her first vaccine shot. The vet told me I should get this done annually. But accoding to recent reports that I've read it's not adviceable to do it too frequent (e.g. to do it once in two years). What do I do?

Go to a feed store, really go to a feed store, ask the people there and besides you can get the shots there a hell of a lot cheaper and give them yourself without the cost of the vet. $7 per combo.shot compared to $15 PER shot plus the visit, I do. I give mine between 12 to 18 months. the only one you cannot give yourself is the rabies vaccine because of the licence buulllll. If your pets are not, repeat not, in a rural area with strange lil critters IE... skunks, racoons, rats (of which will not attack a dog unless threatened or in packs). Sorry to all vets looking, and probably will advise against, because pets need checkups like humans yearly! BUT why go to a doctors office unless you are sick. I know preventitive meds. BUT again $$$ is also a good game for vets and doctors. If this sounds a lil harsh against medical profession so be it, but think about it who is going to get rich. Also give them yeast and garlic pills for ticks and fleas, works wonders, if you have them outside in a yard go to the feed store (again) get a 25-50 lb bag of LIME, depending on how big your yard is, pour a 2 in. deep by at least 6 in wide barrier ALL the way around the yard and that will keep the fleas and ticks out (for those that are in there already treat the yard with the insect killer from the local hardware IE.. Home Depot Lowes and follow directions and KEEP the dogs out for at least 12 - 18 hrs after the soaking.

Vaccines are not needed annually, but the vets still push it. I tell my vet NO! I've read the duration of immunity on vaccines by Dr. Ron Schultz of Wisconsin University and they are good for many years. Also, the American Animal Hospital Association is only recommending that vaccines be given every 3 yrs. This is the protocol that all 27 vet schools in the US are using.

Rabies Vaccination is governed by your state law. Most states have gone to a 3 yr protocol on them as well. A few states still require that they be given annually. The duration of immunity on the Rabies Vaccine is also 7 yrs.

Most shots are once a year. Rabies can come in one year, two year, or three year immunizations. Ask your vet which one they would suggest using with your dog and why, and ask if they have options for other immunizations as well. It never hurts to ask!

Immunizations are *very* important for dogs, just like they are for us... Did you see what they just did in China because of the lack of rabies vaccinations? *shudder* Look it up...
