Sushi chefs are supposed to be specially-trained to detect all sorts of parasites in fish. So if you've got a true professional, then this shouldn't happen.
OTOH, sushi is so popular, that all sorts of know-nothings are making sushi, and maybe that's the source of the problem?
Think about it this way: People get food poisoning and die every day. Think about all of the E coli, Salmonella, and Clostridium outbreaks that there have been in restaurant foods--heck, sometimes in supermarket foods, and even health food juices like Odwalla (which is now pasteurized because of it)! Even if you go totally vegetarian/raw, for the sake of your health, you can get E coli from some raw vegetables (lettuces and other greens, cantaloupe, etc.).
I'd say that if you're worried about sushi, then stick with the cooked varieties. The teriyaki eel ("unagi," if memory serves) is very tasty, as is a California Roll, and many other varieties.

Actually, it is true that eating raw fish can give you worms. Although it is eaten widely in Japan, Japanese take worming medication annually as a matter of course! So if you do eat a lot of sashimi (raw fish - sushi is the rice part), it might be worth keeping an eye out...

I eat sushi when I can, the store has nice rolls ready for eating and I enjoy them with friends.
People who say "ewww raw fish" don't realize that alot of sushi doesn't actually have raw fish...
Some rolls are just imitation crab, rice, and that seaweed stuff.
Along with many others.

Sure. It can also give you tape worms or harmful doses of mercury. But meat can give you mad cow disease. Chicken is often tainted with salmonella. Pork used to be notorious for trichonosis. The strawberry pickers have dirty hands when they pick your strawberries.
Eat at reputable restaurants so you can forget it all and just enjoy sushi to your hearts content.

Yeah, what she said. Just make sure you go to a reputable place, and don't buy it from supermarkets unless you ordered it or they JUST put it on the shelf. Sometimes, dates get mixed up and you don't want to get some more than 12 hours old and have not been kept cooled properly. PS-Philadelphia roll and Spicy tuna-YUM!
