I would love to try eating snails, (like the french do) but the thought of eating them really grosses me out, can anyone tell me what they taste like, and can you buy them from a supermarket, or other speciality store in Melbourne, Australia.

uuhh...you're better off getting them in a restaurant where they cook it for you. It tastes like calamari. Just don't think about it...dump it in your mouth chew and swallow. If Australians can eat ostriches, you can eat snails!

What Do Snails Taste Like

I tried snails over 30 years ago in Okinawa. They have large purplish snails the size of a large man's fist. I thought they didn't have much flavor and were like chewing a large booger. Rather gross! Don't know about French escargot.
Most snails for eating come from China anymore.

Sorry I can't tell you where in Australia to get them, but I'm pretty sure that you will find them in a supermarket. However, they will be canned and those aren't as great as fresh ones. fresh ones you can find at fish markets or Vietnamese or Chinese markets. They are really very good and have a chewy texture when cooked, They can be cooked a variety of ways except fried.
Sauteed in garlic butter, boiled and made into a pickled sort of broth, or stewed and served with rice, they are very tasty. There's a particular kind from the ocean called whelks, they're awesome.

several supermarkets her in the us sell them, why i don't know but they do and also specialty markets so there is no reason to think australia won't...do a web search... a friend of mine ate snails once said they didn't have much of a taste but were real rubbery to chew...doesn't sound worth the money to me....and consider this if the french like it it must be bad

For a bet I tried snails a couple of month's ago.
I do not know what snot taste like but I have heard that is what they taste like.
I live in Perth and I know you can buy cans of snails in your supermarkets like coles or woolies.
They were revolting.

Snails taste about the way you'd think they would.

Really gross.

Who can understand the french anyway?

in my state (ie Sarawak), which is in the east of malaysia, esp eaten by the dayaks (that's an ethnic group) we do eat snails and they're pretty nice, cooked wit tempoyak (i cnt explain wht tht is, but it comes from a fruit, sort of pickled) and the snails meal is cooked soupy, its nothing like the french eating escargots but i personally think this is one nice traditional meal which i would recommend to tourists/foreigners
