Edit:
And contrary to what "animal_mother" may say, the dairy cows and laying hens almost always suffer just as much, if not more, than the beef cows and broiler hens. See the second link for information about that. It's almost incomprehensible to say that meat is wrong, and yet dairy products and eggs are somehow 'okay.'

You will lose some weight, only if you do it right and don't suddenly go on a junk food binge. I would start to slowly cut meat out of your diet. You can even start substituting meat with things by Morningstar, Boca or Quorn....they are great and don't make you feel lousy after. It is not too hard, but I would start to cut out the meat until you aren't eating meat at all. You will feel much better and your stomach won't feel quite as bloated after a meal anymore.

Go because you want to and you believe in the cause.
Being vegetarian goes beyond just not eating meat.

Vegans eat no animal products/by products at all and also do not wear any animal skins or use products tested on animals.

Don’t become veg because it is the in thing to do or to loose weight.

Do your research and hit up your local food shop. Get used to ingredients and carry a list with you so you know what foods to ignore.

Being veg isn’t easy, it is a lot of hard work and dedication but all of the animals will thank you.

If there's no moral reason behind it, I'd say start slowly.

First cut out all red meat. Then cut out chicken or fish. Then cut out both chicken and fish (unless you plan on continuing eating one of those). Even if you just cut out red meat, you will probably lose weight and will definitely be healthier. Chicken, if cooked properly, is not at all dangerous. Fish is very healthy for you in moderation. That's obviously completely up to you.

Some substitutions for former-meat eaters who want to sink their teeth into something are portabello mushroom caps (grill them and treat them like a hamburger), veggie burgers, and tofu. If you live near an urban or modern area, be sure to check out their options for vegetarians. Some vegetarian versions of meat (most made out of tofu) are so good, you can barely taste the difference - and even if you can, they're so good it doesn't matter!

Good luck! Just keep your health in mind - be sure to take vitamins regularly to make sure your body is healthy.

start perhaps by buying (i think it's healthy choice brand) frozen meat-free products that taste and look similar to chicken, bacon, hot dogs, burgers, etc. to get yourself used to what the ingredients in them taste like, enjoy fresh produce when it's in season, and look on the internet for websites with vegetarian friendly recipies.

go vegetarian, but not vegan. you will still get all your nutrients. and how to start? well, just stop eating meat. salads, veggie burgers, black bean burgers, yogurt, pasta, cheese, crackers, cereal, eggs, etc. are your new foods of choice.

Ease into the vegan diet, as your body has to get accusomed to not having meat.

Also, you will need to make certain you get the proteins that will disappear when you go vegan
