I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, but I have no insurance and a low income. My local hospital wouldn't even see me w/o insurance. How do I get care? If I don't get benefits through my job can I buy a private plan that's affordable? I tried looking into medicare and medical, but I don't qualify. Please help!

Go to your local health department. They should have a program for lower income assistance.

Do you have a state hospital in your town or somewhere near it. I know that those private owned hospital ain't tryin' to hear you don't have any money, but the state ones will. I get all of my medications from a state hospital and all of my check ups. I pay 9 dollars for a three month supply of my medication. You just have to make under a certain amount. I'm a student so I qualify. Also if that's not an option, some churches will help people in medical need.

God Bless

Some sates would qualify you because you are in a high risk pool. We made too much for medical assistance but Maryland offers affordable insurance to purchase for high risk pool. Go to social services and ask we got ours through health department ask your doctor also. Send letters to the manufactures you use some will send you supplies free but most of all get insurance, tax deductible and keep it you will always need it.

You're in a tough situation.
#1: Your hospital cannot legally reject medical care due to insurance status. They will see you. However, they'll charge you an arm and a leg for it and make you fill out tons of "liability" paperwork.
#2: Private plan. Cobra is available, but it is very expensive compared to one through an employer. The corporation get "group" rates.
#3: Most "new" plans will frown on a "pre-existing condition". Shop around, but I warn you, if you do find a provider, they will probably charge higher just because of your condition.

you probably don'tneed to go to the hospital for treatment!

Try your local health department.

And, who diagnosed the Diabetes? You can likely get some samples of medications from any doctor (esp. endocrinologists) or the health department. But even doctors need to be paid -- they have expenses too!

I would say a free clinic or health department for care, but for medication a lot of drug companies are now offering medication at a reduced rate or free if you qualify. Good luck to you.
