Lithium is a metallic element discovered in 1818. It is found widely in nature and is present in minute amounts in plants and animal and human tissue, but it has no known function in the human body. In 1949 John Cade, an Australian psychiatrist, found that it was useful for treating elation or mania and since then it has also been found to be effective in preventing recurring biological mood swings. Lithium and lithium compounds have a wide range of uses in industry and only a small fraction of the lithium produced is used for medical purposes. As a medical treatment lithium is always used in the form of one of it's salts, lithium carbonate or lithium citrate. It is the lithium ion which is medically effective.
