I was put on an Antibiotics called Phenoxymethylpenicillin on tuesday for a Tooth abscess. I will be having the tooth removed when the course is over, but I am still in pain after being on the Antibiotics for three days. I have been taking Nurofen and paracetamol, but these only work leaving me to have pain before I take the next round of them. {First I take the Nurofen, two hours later the paracetamol, and so on, but not exceding the doses on the pack} What I would like to know, if anyone else knows, is when are the Antibiotics supposed to start working?

Update.
Unfortunately it has now been 6 days that I have been on the antibiotics, and still in pain. I phoned the dentist, on Thursday, taking the advice from one of my repliers suggesting getting in contact with dentist before the weekend, but the dentist kindly informed me to wait until Monday morning, if pain still bad, then perhaps I will be able to get an appointment, that’s if their not inundated with clients already booked. Now I am angry because yes I am still in pain, but if they had seen me on Thursday then I wouldn’t be in pain right now!!!!! So I will carry on with painkillers, dosing my body with toxins that aren’t meant to be taken after three days of being on them, seems to be the only way to cope with this all, and if I end up with an ulcer because of this, then the reason will be, I was in pain, painkillers are meant to ease pain. If, and when I get an appointment and they pull this tooth out, then I shall be eating my words and kissing the dentist tomorrow,

it takes approx 24hours for AB's to get into your system, as previously said these are not painkillers but however they should start to help reduce infection therefor reduce the pain, you should go back and see your dentist may be that you need a stronger dose of penicillin or another kind of anti-biotic like metronidazole (used for severe infections) or eve a combination of both, depending on how bad the infection is now theymay even be able to take the tooth out for you, generally dont take teeth out when there is infection as anaesthetic wont work as well ones quite acidic and other alkaline meaning infection cancels out the anaesthetic solution!

definately get in contact with your dentist before the weekend!

Good Luck hopefully you'll have a pain free weekend!

Antibiotics usually start working within 24 hours, but that deosn't mean the pain will go away. It can also depend on how bad the infection is.

It takes a few days for the medication to get into your system to work.Be careful about the amount of paracetamol you are taking. If you are still in pain go back to see the dentist as you may need a higher dose of antibiotic

General rule of thumb is 48 hours. So it's starting to work for you but it must be a bad infection. Sorry to hear you're going thru so much pain, good luck on the removal!

I think they put you on Anitbiotics just to kill any infections that may have set in your decaying tooth. The purpose of antibiotics is not to dull the pain.

The pain will still be there until the the source of the pain is gone- hence the tooth.

What you need is pain medication after they remove the tooth. After that, you should be fine.

abcesses in the mouth are hard to treat because the jaw is less vascular, therefore not as much antibiotic gets to the abcess. It can take up to four days before you have no pain.

Till it's amount in blood reaches to an optimum level, which it self demands upon whether you take the medicine empty stomach or the type of food you take. one thing is definite that fatty meals delays the absorption of the drugs mostly.
