I thought that way for the first several years that I was vegetarian; if I "wanted" a "burger" I must be a flawed vegetarian. Sooner or later I realized a couple of things: I'm a vegetarian by choice any nobody has any right or reason to judge what I eat, and boca burgers taste pretty decent and are easy to prepare and allow me to blend in when everyone else is eating beef. It's not that I want my meals to taste like they have meat in them (in fact, I don't use meat substitutes on a regular basis,) it's that I deserve to have as much variety in what I choose to eat as anyone else.

It depends why people are vegetarian in the first place. If they're vegetarian because they think it's healthier, then that's fine, no irony here. They just like the taste of meat but prefer the health benefits of veggies. If they're vegetarian for humane reasons (not wanting to kill animals) then it's OK too. But if they're vegetarian for spiritual reasons, like eating veggies are supposed to draw you away from the mundane desires of this world, then it's ironic.

No. There's nothing wrong with liking the taste of meat. There's no wrong with culinary experimentation. It doesn't matter what it tastes like as long as it's not an animal.

Isn't it ironic how people fawn over cats and dogs and put people in jail for harming them and yet come home to eat a "nice, juicy" steak?

Not really. Not all vegetarians were raised as such - some decided to change at college age, etc. In that case, they had tasted meat for most of their lives, so would probably not mind getting something that resembles meat in a healthier context.

I don't know if it's what you'd call "ironic." I did not become a vegetarian because I didn't like the flavor; I became one because I feel better without heavy meat sitting in my stomach and I don't like the chewy, gristly feeling of meat in my mouth. Boca and Morningstar Farms veggie burgers, veggie chicken, etc., don't have a chewy gristly feel and don't leave my stomach feeling like it has a huge rock sitting in it.

Not at all. For many of us, it's not that we hated the taste of flesh but the fact that an animal was mistreated and slaughtered for consumption. With items like boca and other faux "meat", we get the taste and satisfaction plus less fat and no cholesterol and no animals were harmed.

What does it matter to you anyway? Are you trying to justify your habit of eating dead animal flesh and feel like this question will give you brownie points in your own mind??

I have always found that a littel funny to be honest. But alot of Vegetarians didn't start out Veg. Not only that, but some/many switched to Veg because they thought eating meat was cruel, not because it tasted bad.

I would ask you to bear in mind that not all people who eat vegetarian diets are doing so by choice. Both my grandfathers had to radically curtail their consumption of red meat after having heart surgeries, so things like Boca patties and Smart Dogs and the meatless "beef tips" allowed them to abide by their doctors' advice without feeling deprived and miserable.

Yes. I also find it ironic that at some vegetarian restaurants, they will have meatless meat dishes, for instance, they will call it chicken fried steak but it is tofu.
